EAST TEXAS (KLTV/KTRE) – Jeff and Mrs. Pickin' were stocking up on their way back to East Texas after a trip to Dallas. It was the day after major flooding, and weeds were piled up on the curbs of homes for miles, making for a horrible sight on the drive home. That chaos has reached East Texas this week. We know it's tough for you right now, and we hope sharing some of this week's Kitchen Pickin' menu items will help you find a little relief from your current routine.
Christmas Fancy Cups
Jeff: The definition of “vintage” is more than 20 years old. This set was made in China, but would qualify as vintage by now. There appears to have been some political intent behind the production of this product. The box originally said “Made in Hong Kong,” but that has been erased and replaced with a Chinese sticker. Either way, the manufacturer has managed to make these little cups look like they were made in the USA in the 1980s.
Steph: Yes, it was. If you hadn't shown me the sticker, I would have thought it was made in the USA in the 80's. It's really cute. And, importantly, it's not dishwasher safe. (My biggest pet peeve! Don't put these old things in the dishwasher.)
Dallas Cowboys Stein
Jeff: This style of drinkware really exudes Americana vibes. We actually bought two of these. The other one is a Coors Light mug. It's double-walled so your drink stays cold and holds a lot. It's a US-made brand.
Steph: This is going to be a fan favorite new cup, and we're sure it won't last long!
Nickel Silver Creamer
Jeff: To be honest, when I walked into this estate sale (not in East Texas) I was feeling anxious because the prices were inflated and I was determined to find a bargain. Did I show them something? It's called nickel silver, it's not actually silver. I've always wanted to try silver but just couldn't bring myself to do it.
Steph: This is new information for me. I knew nothing about nickel silver. After researching, I discovered that it is made of various alloys of copper, nickel, and zinc, and although it looks silver, it does not contain any silver.
Lenox Cookie Jar
Jeff: My life depends on me being able to get this container home in two parts (the jar and the lid). Mrs. Picker had her eye on this since Friday night and woke up early Saturday morning to find it at a local estate sale. Lennox is indeed a very popular brand.
Steph: This is very pretty. I hope you got it home safely. It's made of porcelain and, believe it or not, is dishwasher safe, although they recommend hand washing. According to the Amazon listing for this piece, it was first sold in February 2012.
We've featured everything from vintage Tupperware to Pyrex and Fire King, as well as more modern items like collectible popcorn buckets and Lennox products like the cookie jar above. Want to see more items featured in previous episodes? Click here!
