sun gold
We are reading Braiding Sweetgrass, published in 2013. This book is still on the reservation list at my local library and is very popular. “author, Botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to use the tools of science to question nature.as a member of Potawatomi NationShe embraces the idea that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. ” She says, “Awakening of ecological consciousness requires recognizing and celebrating our interconnectedness with the rest of the living world.”
I have always valued this natural relationship and have spent much of my life outdoors in nature. In particular, I ponder and marvel at photosynthesis. When photons of light from the sun reflect off leaves, their energy excites chlorophyll molecules. That photon begins the process of splitting the water molecules. An oxygen atom separated from water instantly combines with other atoms to form an oxygen molecule, or O.2. This chemical reaction also produces a molecule called ATP and another molecule called NADPH. Both of these allow cells to store energy. ATP and NADPH also participate in the synthetic part of photosynthesis.
In other words, not only are plants responsible for feeding us, but they are also responsible for producing the oxygen we breathe. How cool! Reading this reminded me of my slightly whimsical girlfriend KTK that I wrote about a few years ago, so I'll write about it here again.
At first there was nothing
Then the ceiling cat said, “Let there be light.''
And there was still nothing
But now I can see it.
For example, imagine you are at the center of the sun and some hydrogen atoms fuse to form helium. Why not?It really exists many The pressure there. This releases energy in the form of two neutrinos, two positrons, and a gamma photon. Photons travel at the speed of light, but because the center of the sun is filled with or even made up of plasma, they can't travel very far, bouncing off in all directions, and eventually Reach the light sphere. This can take up to a million years, and some say it can take up to 500 million years. You'd think they'd be aging by this time, but thanks to Einstein, we know that traveling at the speed of light, they don't age at all.
Then, our photons still shoot toward Earth at the speed of light, which takes about 8 minutes.
There are plants growing in your garden. It is the culmination of millions of years of evolutionary refinement. This produces chlorophyll within the leaves. Chlorophyll has the surprising, even miraculous property of being a molecule that can absorb light energy and store it as sugar. Therefore, our photons hit the leaves and perform miracles that result in plant growth. Photon has finished his work. And what do you do? Pick weeds or ignore them. It is better to understand it, admire it and worship it. Weeds are plants that grow in the wrong place. It could also be a flower.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series For those who want to share a virtual kitchen table with other Daily Kos readers who aren't throwing pies at each other. Please feel free to drop by and ask us anything about music, the weather, the garden, what to cook for dinner, etc. Newcomers may notice that many of the people posting in this series already know each other to some degree, but we also welcome guests to our kitchen table and hope to make new friends.
