Natural wood features always come to the forefront when discussing trends influencing kitchen décor, and no one has set the precedent quite like Lenny Kravitz.
The singer pairs organic wood features (including walls and open shelves) with cool stainless steel countertops to block out the warmth of the wood and put an interesting spin on a popular kitchen trend. This space is a masterclass in how to mix and match materials, showing sharp contrasts that are as functional as they are aesthetically pleasing. So it's no surprise that design experts encourage us to follow suit.
“Using texture in your kitchen design can make a huge difference to the overall aesthetic of the room, adding visual interest and tactile appeal to a pared-down color scheme,” says Ca' Pietra Creative says director Grazzie Wilson (listing mixed materials as one of her top kitchen trends).
The abundance of wood in Kravitz's kitchen naturally lends it a strong brown tone, but Wilson explains that the metal accents interrupt the neutral atmosphere and simultaneously zone the space. and it feels like it's interesting. “In a colorful kitchen, textures break up bold blocks of color and help zone different areas,” she says.
“2024 will be all about combining different textured surfaces, from exposed brick to wood and stone. If you don't have these materials on hand, use them for both walls and kitchen floors. You can recreate it using tiles.”
Both wooden features and mixed materials are famously shaping the way we approach kitchen design, but metal accents are equally on trend for next year. Kravitz has primarily introduced stainless steel to countertops, but there's no need to stop there. To take things a step further, Wilson recommends choosing luxurious metal features that bring extra interest to the space.
“2024 is the year to reinvent the Roaring '20s in our homes, and what better way than by adding a statement piece to your kitchen in the form of a gorgeous metallic backsplash,” she says.
“Splash is often one of the first things you notice when you walk into a kitchen, so it’s important to think carefully about how you can address it. As the trend for high-end metals continues, Several eye-catching tile designs are now available. If you're adding a metallic splashback, add backlighting or downlighting to take advantage of the material's strength and maximize its appeal. We recommend that you do so.”
