Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to join us at your establishment to celebrate Black Excellence. let's start. Well, we have to start with love. How did you two meet?
We actually went to the same high school, but we didn't actually meet and start dating until after we graduated from high school. We were introduced by mutual friends. From then on it was just us.
Where are you all from?
I was born in Roanoke, Virginia, and Ashley is from Philadelphia.
What brought you here to Augusta?
My father was a military man and this is where he got his feet wet. That's how we got here.
What is the meaning behind your facility name?
Well, cooking is my love language. That's how I show it to the people I love and care about…I love cooking so I can express that to them. Here, you'll practice five love languages, including affirmations, physical touch, and acts of service. If you need the rest, please search. (lol) It's really about changing the trajectory of someone's day. Everyone is going through something. It's tough here right now. So when you come into this building, we strive to change the way you look at your day. When you leave here, you will leave in a different way than the way you entered through love.
How did you start cooking?
I'm the older sibling. In our day, older siblings were our parents when we were away from home. So, tired of following the instructions on the side of the box, I started experimenting with different seasonings, flavors, and sauces. When my brother and sister said they liked it, I knew I was on to something.
So why did you decide to open a facility here in Augusta?
Just share food with people you know or strangers from your hometown.
How has Love Language Kitchen and Lounge been received since opening?
I love the experience. It's slowly recovering and that's kind of what I'm hoping for. I didn't want to be overwhelmed at first and then spoil your topic. We want to continue to build on that. I want repeat customers. We don't want people to just come in once and say, “Oh, I tried that.'' I want it to be like, “I'm going to go there every Wednesday, or I'm going to try something every Thursday.'' So you really need patience. Patience is the key. You can't rush anything. You need to take your time and work on it. That's how you pour out your love. I really like it when I hurry. In other words, you have to enjoy the journey.
So, what kind of food do you serve here?
What kind of food do you like? (lol) we offer everything. I learned traditional cuisines such as French, Asian, and Mediterranean cuisines. Gather the flavors and put them in your stomach.
What is your most popular dish? What do most people like to order?
So we had an appetizer we called “The Dirty Bird.” Deviled eggs topped with bacon and shrimp. Then there's a pasta called Bob Marley. Spicy jerk alfredo with grilled chicken, smoked sausage, onions and peppers. There's another one called “The Philly of the Sea.” It's salmon filly. It's made like a Philadelphia cheesesteak, but without the ground beef or chicken. It has salmon instead.
