Australians have reacted in horror after a man revealed the scale of an ant infestation he recently discovered in his home, with footage showing the pests completely overpowering the food he had stored in his pantry.
An Australian man posted a video online earlier this week in which he said he had tried using insecticide to stop a swarm of tiny ants spreading throughout his cupboard, but it had the opposite effect – and the “astonishing” scene quickly revealed the scale of the ant infestation.
“Pay your rent, ants, cough it up,” he joked in the video's caption. It's funny, but the guy's clever pun ends when the footage pans to another shelf, covering the interior with tens of thousands of ants so densely packed together that at first glance they could be mistaken for black mold.
“These are the little specks of ant spray I sprayed last night,” the man begins in the video, pointing to the splatter of insecticide.
“[After returning the next day] “I said, 'Oh, they're gone, they're gone,'” he continues, showing us a lower floor pantry that's relatively ant-free. The man then hoists the camera onto a top shelf and says, “No, they just went up to the penthouse.”
Tens of thousands of people reacted, many in disbelief: “When I saw the Penthouse it took my breath away,” one woman said. “My eyes almost popped out of my head,” said another.
“I never expected that!” a third wrote. “I'm sure the ants have developed a resistance to the antrids over the years,” another said, while another added: “I've never seen such bad ants in a food storage unit.” “You might need to call in an exterminator,” one woman suggested.
Tips from a Pest Control Expert on Getting rid of Ants
Warren Bailey from ABC Pest Control told Yahoo News Australia that ant infestations in the home can be treated yourself under certain circumstances, depending on the density of the ant colony.
“If you use a good quality ant gel, the ants will carry it back to their nest and clear it out,” he previously said.
However, Bailey advised that commercial gels may not be enough to eradicate the entire nest, so you may need to call in a pest control professional.
