LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – For the past 30 years, Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach has been providing basic necessities to some of Lincoln’s most vulnerable people, and as the number of people they help continues to grow, increasing by 20% in the last year alone, so too has the need to expand their facility.
That's the purpose of the Bald Hope expansion, a new facility on North 27th Street just north of Matt Talbot's main building. The top floor will have an area to store household items for people experiencing homelessness or moving into new apartments: trash bags, hand towels, silverware, etc. The goal is to streamline the process by storing these items on-site, eliminating the expense of renting a storage unit.
The bottom floor is a three-car garage that will store the agency's vans as well as larger donated items such as gently used sofas and tables.
The new facility has been open for about two months and has already helped at least six people adjust to their new lives.
“We hope to continue this as housing opportunities grow in Lincoln. This is an opportunity to offer housing to more guests,” said Allyn Sampson, executive director of Matt Talbott Inc. “Just the dignity of being able to come in and pick out what fits your home or what looks like the way you want your home to look.”
The Bold Hope Expansion was built with donations from last year's Give to Lincoln Day Campaign.
“I think it speaks to the power of providing dignity and compassion and options to people who work so hard and don't have anything,” Sampson said. “For the community to come together and work together speaks to the compassion of the community and we're so grateful for that.”
To celebrate the new facility expansion, Matt Talbot will be hosting an open house on Thursday from 5:30pm outdoors between the main building and the new facility. All are welcome to attend.
