Misty Copeland's Memories of childhood experiences in the kitchen are rather sparse.
Appearing on Audible Originalyour mom's kitchenPodcast hosted by michelle norrisIn , the legendary ballet dancer looks back at her early years with her family and how the kitchen, or lack thereof, helped shape her into the person she is today.
“Well, we didn't have a stable home until I moved in with my stepfather,” Copeland said when asked about her formative years. “We lost our homes a lot. We lived in a lot of motels.”
She went on to say, “I moved around a lot to different motels.”
Describing her experience in a motel with a kitchen, she says, “But it wasn't really a kitchen. You could call it a kitchenette or something like that. I didn't really cook much. ” he declared.
“So I don't really remember cooking,” she added.
To make ends meet with what they had, Copeland's family frequented restaurants and markets on a budget.
“It's fast food, [we] “I would shop at 99 cent stores and cheap grocery stores and eat Cup Noodles and canned vegetables,” she recalled.
Still, Copeland isn't cynical about her younger years without basic memories of the kitchen.
“I mean, I don't know that I've necessarily had a negative experience or anything that happened in the kitchen,” she said, adding, “I don't really remember the kitchen being a part of my upbringing.”
