After a difficult experience with their own kitchen renovation, retail veterans Emily Arthur and Sharon Dranko vowed to find a better way.
“We realized how fragmented and frustrating the kitchen design process was and how uninspiring the product selection was,” the duo say, “and we knew that with our backgrounds in design and merchandising, we could create a better experience.”
The result was Isla Porter, a platform that uses AI to streamline the process, allowing interior designers to focus on the creative aspects of kitchen projects.
“With the support of AI, the entire kitchen design process can be carried out in a fraction of the time, without limiting creativity,” the duo say. “Our process takes around three hours of collaboration with the team to produce a full-colour rendering. Without the support of AI, it would currently take a designer around 40 hours to arrive at a fully rendered design.”
The process includes a survey of usage needs and design preferences, measuring the space with a LIDAR-enabled scan, and customizing a floor plan. Isla Porter designers can help put together finishes and provide desired FF&E for interior designers to include in full-color 3D renderings, including walk-through videos. Isla's design team also shared a report with shopping links for purchase, although currently Isla Porter only sells cabinets.
The company's trade design services package costs $1,500, but the first project for members of the Isla trade program is free, he added.
“AI tools handle all the time-consuming technical work of planning optimized functionality and making sure there are no non-ideal conditions like doors colliding with each other,” they say. “AI doesn't dictate the creative choices; it's all driven by the client's vision for the project.”
