Northern Virginia (DC News Now) — About a month or two ago, Hani Almadoon was talking with her brother in northern Gaza about the many life-threatening and life-ending hardships people face there. This includes starvation and starvation.
So they came up with an idea to help people.
“What we ended up with was a food kitchen, a soup kitchen. Some produce is still available on the ground, but it's very expensive and not many people have cash,” Almadoon said.
Almadoon said that initially, financial support to set up the soup kitchen came from friends and social media followers. He decided to open an online account to collect donations.
“We can now do even more for families who have no other option than to eat inside Gaza, especially in the north,” Al-Madoun said.
Hani said many of her family members volunteer at the soup kitchen, which feeds about 3,000 people a day.
“My family eats the same food that my brother makes…My mother prepares the meals and my sister helps,” Almadun said.
Hani said she is very grateful for the support she has received from the community.
“We love the DMV. This is where our family has lived for 20 years and we love the community…The community knows us and rallies around us. “He did it,” Almadoon said.
Almadoon said he was happy to be able to help his family in Gaza, but was worried about his relatives there.
His other brother was killed in an Israeli airstrike in November.
“Our house was destroyed. My family is homeless, but my mother is doing this to commemorate our war dead and relatives, and our children are fed and our stomachs are filled because of the work we did.” He said he sleeps better at night when it's full,” Almadun said.
