ENDIcott, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) — A ribbon cutting was held this morning in Endicott for the new year's location of a popular local food truck.
Kitchen Counter opened May 1 on West Main Street in Endicott. Partners Mark Yezzi and Aaron Laughlin took over the former Smarties location, keeping the Perry's Ice Cream but offering specialty sandwiches like Smashburgers and fried chicken sandwiches in place of chicken barbecue.
The veteran restaurateurs launched their food truck last year and began looking for a brick-and-mortar location. This is our first time selling ice cream. Mr Yetszi said demand for ice cream was strong despite the poor weather.
“I think ice cream is something you can eat all year round, but maybe we just don't know it yet. Even if it's a rainy day, I'd rather have a milkshake than a really hot day.” “It seems to be popular, and I think it will continue even as the weather gets warmer. I don't see this trend slowing down.”
Yezzi said she also made sure to stock up on lemon sorbet, one of her grandmother's favorites. The interior retains the feel of a retro ice cream parlor, with stools and checkered tiles.
Yezzi and Laughlin plan to take the kitchen truck to events again this summer. The kitchen counter is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
