RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Black Restaurant Experience is running for the eighth year in a row, and in an in-studio interview with 8News, the owner of Mama J's Kitchen talked about this week's big impact.
The week runs from Sunday, March 10th through Sunday, March 17th, and offers Richmond residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy a variety of cuisines from area Black restaurants.
8News anchors Autumn Childress and Delaney Hall took an inside look at the effectiveness of the Richmond Black Restaurant Experience with Lester Johnson, owner of Mama Jay's Kitchen in Richmond.
Johnson said the Richmond Black Restaurant Experience is a way to spotlight Black restaurants in the Richmond area, and Mama J's has been a part of it since its inception.
“There is nothing more important for a restaurant than marketing, and this is the ideal way to get people to know about your restaurant. And hopefully the impact this will have is that people will be able to get the word out not just during the week, but throughout the year. We'll keep coming back,” Johnson said.
Johnson said Mama J's typically sees a 15% to 20% increase in business on weekdays.
Johnson added that restaurant patrons can expect this week's specials at Mama J's. It's a turkey wing stuffed with stuffing and rice for $12.
Mama J's is one of 37 restaurants participating in this year's Richmond Black Restaurant Experience.
