As part of a project to renovate a Grade II listed manor house near Cheltenham, Becca Powis, senior designer at Sims Hilditch, was asked to breathe new life into the kitchen. The owners, a married couple with three elementary school-aged daughters, had recently purchased the house after living in Singapore.
“They wanted to create a cozy kitchen that they could enjoy with their kids and friends,” says Becca. “The room's layout was practical and the handmade furniture was in good condition, so my job was to rethink the color scheme and decorative details to enhance the warmth and character of the space.”
Choosing a bright green paint for the cabinets was key to creating a fresh backdrop for the room. The shade is Neptune Sage, which contrasts with the Farrow & Ball railing chosen for the cook table island. “Deep, dark colors add interest and definition,” Becca explains.
Marlborough Tiles' Meadow Grass Brick tiles reflect the greenery in the cupboard and the view of trees and plants from the adjacent garden room. Shiny finishes and undulating surfaces bring texture to a room, an effect enhanced by lining them with antique copper pots.
The island's oak top was sanded to create a lighter look, in keeping with the timeless feel of the space, and the handles were replaced with lacquered brass-finished knobs and cup handles. “Over time, it develops a patina and adds even more character to your kitchen,” she says.
A set of Marisol Seagrass chairs from Restoration Hardware surrounds the dining table, designed for relaxed family meals. “The chairs are smart, yet practical and comfortable to match the overall feel of the space,” she says.
