It's certainly not uncommon for interiors experts to discuss cabinet tones that set design trends, but as Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes' kitchens remind us, cabinets have a lot to do with us. There's more to it than just the colors you choose.
Gosling and Mendes chose white, a timeless cabinet color, for their home, but their design decisions are anything but boring. Thanks to the handle (or more precisely, the absence of a handle), this is a minimalist lover's dream. Although timeless, white kitchen cabinets run the risk of looking (in some cases) jarring. But as experts explain, Gosling and Mendes' “hidden” handles make the space feel sleek, modern, and right on-trend.
“More hidden and simple storage will be popular in 2024,” commented William Durrant, owner of Herringbone. And perhaps nothing is more discreet than a cabinet with recessed handles.
There are several ways to take advantage of the minimalist kitchen storage movement, but our editors' current favorite is recessed handles. “Although a trend, embedded handles are not a fad,” commented digital editor Jennifer Ebert. house and garden. “Practical yet subtly beautiful, I welcome this handle as the unsung hero of my minimalist girlfriend's kitchen, but you don't have to embrace this stripped-down aesthetic to be on trend. ”
For Gosling and Mendes, recessed handles are incorporated into a broader minimalist style, while uncluttered marble countertops and vertical tiles add interest to the splashback. But as Evert hints, these handles have a place outside of traditional minimalist kitchens.
“While this look lends itself naturally to Scandinavian minimalist-style kitchens, there's no reason you can't bring hidden handles into more maximalist rooms. They're just as beautiful and functional regardless of the background.”

Durant explains that hidden and simple storage ideas are trending in the kitchen (recessed handles are a pioneer). Gosling and Mendes inspiration aside, there are other reasons to join this movement.
“The floor-to-ceiling units and lower cabinets are also designed with clever storage in mind,” comments Durant.
These look great in oak or stone with stone splashbacks when combined with floating shelves or display units. These shelves, which can be installed above the sink or in the utility room, are beautiful and functional and act as a nice feature in any space. These shelves open up your kitchen and create a nice sense of space, especially if you have tall units or upper cabinets. ”
