Italian furniture designer Silvia Marlia has always been fascinated by how easily children adapt and learn, but after moving to Hong Kong in 2009, the mother of two children, aged three and eight, decided to learn more about child development by taking a Montessori course.
Sand Furniture Italy
After completing her course in 2012, Silvia founded Sand Furniture where she applied her newfound knowledge to contemporary furniture design.
“When we are children, our minds are like sand and still forming,” Sylvia says, explaining the brand name. “Unfortunately, as we get older, we tend to lose this great ability to absorb information from our environment,” she laughs.
More options for kids' furniture now available
She also founded the company to expand furniture options for children: “There are so many options on the market for adults, but not for kids,” she laments.
Promoting children's development
Her creations are designed for toddlers aged three and above, helping to hone children's motor skills through touch: “The brand aims to empower children to develop within their own capabilities by being free to explore their environment,” she explains.
For example, the stackable toolbox, an organizer made of stackable trays, can hold art supplies, crayons, small accessories, and more.
Simple and useful household accessories to help children learn
“Walking while holding a tray in both hands at the same time is a rather complex movement for a child,” points out Silvia, who believes that this simple yet useful accessory can help children become more independent.
Natural colors only
Featuring natural wood tones and earthy tones, Sand's products are different to typical children's furniture and its bright colors.
“I don't think you need too much color in furniture; a child's toy is enough to brighten up a room,” says Silvia. Each product features rounded corners for safety and a smooth, matte finish, a hallmark of the company's beautiful and practical furniture.
