When my husband and I moved into our house, we knew we needed to do some DIY upgrades to the look, especially in the kitchen. We were lucky to have plenty of light thanks to French doors and skylights, but the light fixtures themselves were not very bright.
In particular, the dome-shaped light above the kitchen table was reminiscent of a submarine porthole, and the frosted finish reduced the amount of light coming from the bulb. Light.
So we began looking for lighting fixtures that would complement the rest of the space. We needed three fixtures, so they needed to be easy to install and affordable. Enter the Nathan James Jace Semi-Flush Mount Light.
How to decide on a lighting fixture
Our Executive Home Director, Danielle Brandel, introduced me to the brand earlier this year, and the Jace light immediately caught my eye, so I reached out to the brand and suggested I try one out in my own kitchen. True to the brand's midcentury modern style ethos, the Jace features a sleek conical shade and vintage gold hardware. The linen shade diffuses the light, while the gold hardware reflects and bounces it around. I also loved the size and scale; it was the perfect size for the skylight next to it and the kitchen table below.
Regular price is a steal at $110 each, but they're around $80 during Nathan James' Memorial Day Sale. It's an easy DIY project that can instantly upgrade any space, and it's a nice discount, especially if you need three like me.

How I upgraded my kitchen lighting
My husband and I have upgraded light switches throughout our house, so we know that this brand's 20-minute installation is pretty accurate: After shutting off the power at the breaker box, you take apart the old light fixture, connect the new wiring, and add the new bulb (the old one was gone). very We're going to re-stain it in warm and yellow colors and put in new fixtures. There are a few more steps, but they're all simple and easy.
But as I've learned from previous DIY home projects, the 20-minute estimate doesn't include the time it takes to angle the mounting plate so that the hardware finally matches up with all three fixtures. Or to remove the hardware from the breaker box. think Verification completed actually Done. Or if the light doesn't come on you'll need to recheck the wiring and start again. All that we considered and came across. Thankfully we had an afternoon set aside instead of an hour.
But even though the project took longer than planned, it was still so worth it and the kitchen is so much better now. The linen shades, gold hardware, and scale of the light fixtures make the space feel more inviting and thoughtfully decorated. And the lighting is actually Now I use it often instead of my regular overhead lighting because it provides light.
Well, it's time to upgrade your dining room lighting.
