As Shania Twain prepares to take the stage at Glastonbury, people are turning their attention to her little-known makeup-removing skincare routine.
In the video Harper's BazaarFor years, Twain has been diving into her kitchen cupboard and making her own DIY face scrubs.
In the video, the “You're Still the One” singer grabs some sugar and olive oil and explains, “Just mix it in the palm of your hand. I don't really use any makeup remover. I just mix olive oil and sugar.”
“I'm not scrubbing too hard, just gently.”
While this may sound like a genius idea at first, many commenters with sensitive skin were less than impressed.
“My sensitive skin is screaming,” one person joked, while another added, “My skin barrier is broken and I'm crying.”
A third echoed: “Sugar is a total no-no for my skin as it damages it so much.”
One expert, Dr Stephen Humble, medical director of Hedox Clinic Harley Street, strongly advised against trying this at home.
“I love Shania Twain, but I think it's bad advice for her to recommend and demonstrate the olive oil and sugar scrub technique,” he said.
“The abrasive properties of sugar can irritate sensitive skin and cause microtrauma, especially around the delicate eye area.”
He suggested that olive oil could actually clog pores and “significantly worsen acne.”
“In addition, allergic reactions to these ingredients can also occur, causing redness, itching, and swelling,” Dr Humble continued, offering an alternative tip: using an enzyme mask to “exfoliate and brighten the skin.”
