OOSTBURG – Owner Jeri Flipps said opening Margo's, located at 110 NN Ninth St. in Oostburg, is not her story, but God's story.
Flipse had a dream of opening a store for 10 years because she loved displaying and reusing products. But now, she said, was never the right time, as she works full-time and sends her children to school and sports.
She said she originally considered opening Margo's in a small building on Center Avenue when space became available, but she couldn't commit.
“I was such a chicken that I didn't know how to do my job and everything,” she said.
Then, a rental space became available in a strip mall owned by his father. Flipps decided to do just that.
As her children grew up, future staff moved to the area and retired from their previous jobs, everything began to fall into place.
“The next thing I knew, the walls were falling down and the floor was peeling off,” Flipps said.
In its early stages, Margo's was intended to be a country store selling antiques, but Flipps said she is less artsy and her style is more modern.
“This is much better than anything I could have imagined,” Flipps said. “It was as if the Lord was telling me, “Slow down.''
Margo's is a boutique with a little bit of everything, including upcycled furniture, handcrafted items like aprons and mittens, woodwork, housewares, books by local authors, and Kup's Coffee.
Flipse wants Margo's to become a community store, a place where people stop and talk.
“My mind was thinking about this little store on Center Avenue, and he was like, 'No, this is your space,'” Flipps said. “People will be able to come to the Pig (Pigley Wiggly) and Subway and on their way to the store.”
“So there was one thing I was hoping for: God (God) had better plans for me,” she continued.
With the support of my family, friends, and store partners who helped me get the store off the ground, I feel like Flipse is everyone's store, not just my store.
“I couldn't do it without the people who dreamed it with me, the people who made it possible, and the people who are here every day,” she said.
Margo's is open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
