Many of us are guilty of throwing away food without thinking about it, but one social media star is looking to change that with a simple trick that will make your home-cooked meals taste even better.
If you've ever thought about throwing away your vegetable peels, think again – one influencer has revealed the perfect way to put them to good use.
Many of us are guilty of throwing away food that's still edible: according to Business Waste, 9.5 million tonnes of food, worth billions of pounds, ends up in the bin every year.
But food blogger Carly Bodrug has had enough, and wants you to make the most of unconventional ingredients. Known on social media as @plantyou, the Instagram star offers up some tips for saving onion and garlic peels that could take your cooking to a whole new level.
“Stop throwing away your garlic and onion skins,” she urged her 5 million followers. First, Carly washed the skins she'd collected in a mixture of vinegar and water, then placed them on a tray in the oven and baked them on the lowest temperature for a few hours.
Rather than recommending a specific cooking time, she advised her followers to just watch them cook until the skin is crisp and dry, adding: “Then blend them together and you'll have your own unique onion and garlic seasoning.”
Carly zoomed in on the powder and then poured it into an empty seasoning jar, ready to sprinkle on her favorite recipes. Onion powder can be used as a substitute for fresh onions in a variety of recipes, and unlike the fresh vegetable, it doesn't need to be peeled or chopped. Combined with garlic, it adds even more flavor.
Carly's followers were keen to try the trick for themselves, with one writing: “Great idea! I keep bagged veggie scraps in the freezer. I keep adding more and when I get full I make soup. So tasty.”
Another added: “I have a bag of onion skins to do this with right now,” while another suggested: “I tried this and it tasted like air. Add a bit of salt and some actual onion and garlic for flavour.”
