World Central Kitchen has decided to resume food distribution in Gaza, nearly a month after seven aid workers were killed in an Israeli attack, as “the humanitarian situation remains dire.”
World Central Kitchen (WCK), the food charity founded by celebrity chef José Andrés, has “finally decided to continue providing school meals” and has sent 276 trucks carrying 8 million meals to Rafa. He said he was preparing to pass through the intersection.
WCK announced that trucks loaded with aid will be sent from Jordan to Gaza.
Why is World Central Kitchen reopening in Gaza?
Erin Gore, the charity's chief executive, said: “The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire.”
“We will reopen with the same energy and dignity and focus on feeding as many people as possible,” he said.
“We have to keep feeding.”
Mr Gore added: “We have a decision to make: either we stop eating altogether during one of the worst hunger crises in history, or we lose our lives as donors, aid workers and civilians are threatened and killed.'' Are you going to continue eating, knowing that there are people out there?”
“These are the most difficult conversations we have had, and we considered all points of view in our deliberations. Ultimately, we continue to provide food and our mission to feed people during the most difficult of times.” “I decided that I had to continue,” he added.
Why did World Central Kitchen cease operations in Gaza?
WCK is one of the main suppliers of much-needed aid to Gaza. It is said to have provided more than 43 million meals to the Gaza Strip since the war began in October.
In the April 1 airstrike, the vehicles of aid workers engaged in humanitarian relief operations were destroyed one after another by three missiles, killing seven people in four minutes, prompting the ministry to suspend operations. had decided to cancel.
The decision raised concerns that a vital lifeline could be severed.
Three of the seven aid workers were British nationals, others were Australian, Polish, dual US and Canadian nationals and one was Palestinian.
According to WCK, the rescue convoy, which consisted of three vehicles, two of them armored vehicles, was struck while leaving a warehouse in Deir al-Balah. “Teams were unloading there more than 100 tons of humanitarian food aid that had been transported to Gaza by sea.''
The support convoy was attacked by three guided missiles fired by the Israel Defense Forces. An IDF investigation found that officers had ordered the attack because they suspected armed Hamas operatives were accompanying them, but this turned out to be false.
Since the attack, Israel has been trying to persuade WCK to return to Gaza.
