Miles City, Montana – On May 7, 2024 at 7:58 a.m., Miles City Fire Rescue was dispatched to Garfield Elementary School for a report of a fire in the kitchen and the entire school was evacuated. MCFR responded with one engine, one ambulance, and two command vehicles.
Upon arrival, light smoke was coming from the main entrance to the school, and students and faculty were actively evacuating the building. Garfield school officials said the fire was extinguished with a fire extinguisher. MCFR quickly entered the school and determined there was no active fire. Students and staff were brought back to school to protect themselves from the weather and isolated in their own classrooms. MCFR units remained on scene and ventilated the school gymnasium for over an hour. There were no reports of injuries.
MCFR would like to thank school personnel for their prompt use of fire extinguishers. Thank you very much to all the students who cooperated! The cause of this incident is still under investigation at this time.
