It has earned a permanent place in my kitchen.
Over the past year, I've made it my mission to find the most affordable kitchen, home and lifestyle products to make life easier and better. Really Offer value. I've found some amazing products and some total duds on shopping sites like Temu, but that's a story for another day.
For example, this rice washing bowl is one of the standout products that is always in my kitchen.
Is this $1 tool something you should take to a desert island?
Yes, I couldn't just I would take this bowl with me to a desert island. I've been known to travel with a chef's knife, essential spices, and my Microplane mandolin, which I absolutely adore, but this bowl would definitely be on the list. This simple plastic bowl with a built-in strainer has revolutionized the way I wash and prepare foods like rice, beans, grains, lentils, berries, and small vegetables.
When I first got it, I thought it looked cheap and a little smaller than it looked online. But to be fair, it looks more elegant in the pictures than it does in person. For these reasons, I was initially hesitant to use it. But my doubts quickly disappeared and it has become one of my most used kitchen tools. It's been just over a year since I got it and I use it every day. Apart from a little wear on the bottom from regular use, it's still in good condition.
The bowl is oval shaped, about 6.5 inches wide, 7.75 inches long, and about 3.5 inches deep at the base. Its functional design features a perforated basket positioned on the side of the bowl, just above the curve at the apex, so water doesn't spill everywhere when it's filled.
The pictures online show the dimensions from the widest part but don't take into account how you will use it. In fact, you can easily and comfortably wash about 2 cups of rice at a time.
Before using this, I would wash my rice in a bowl, colander, or sieve. But when straining and transferring to the pot, a lot of the rice would fall out, making a mess of water and messy rice. This bowl is much more efficient and makes my job easier in every way.
Place the bowl over the sink to wash the rice, then lift the bowl and tilt it over the sink to strain it – the water flows through easily and the holes help catch any small particles – then scoop the rice out with your hand along the same edge so no rice gets lost.
There are plenty of premium versions of this product out there, but when it comes to price, convenience, and value, this humble Temu product is hard to beat. If you're looking to add one super handy tool to your kitchen, this humble plastic bowl won't disappoint.
