Thanks to the Stop Inflation Act, the largest climate bill in US history, energy-efficient home upgrades are becoming cheaper and more affordable for Americans.
The IRA rebate program has made more than $8 billion available to states, territories and tribes to reduce the cost of installing energy-efficient equipment, including rebates of up to $840 for Energy Star-certified electric induction cooktops and heat pump dryers.
What home improvements qualify for the discount?
Energy Star reports that homeowners who switch to earth-friendly appliances and weatherize their homes could receive rebates of up to $14,000, in addition to a federal income tax credit that covers 30 percent of the project cost.
Specifically, homeowners can receive up to $840 in savings by installing an electric stove or oven or an Energy Star-certified heat pump dryer.
If you're not ready to purchase a standard-sized electric stove, portable induction cooktop burners from brands like Duxtop are a great, affordable option that allows you to avoid dangerous fumes from a gas stove while minimizing counter space.
As detailed by EcoWatch, a pilot program in New York's Bronx found that apartment residents who switched from gas to induction cooktops experienced a 35% reduction in indoor nitrogen dioxide pollution, which can lead to a variety of lung diseases.
Induction stoves also cook food much faster than traditional electric stoves, making them both more efficient and healthier.
Homeowners who want to electrify other parts of their home can save even more: Energy Star says they can get up to $1,750 off an Energy Star-certified heat pump water heater, $1,600 off attic insulation and sealing, $8,000 off an Energy Star heat pump, and up to $6,500 off electrical wiring and panel upgrades.
Electrifying your home is one of the easiest ways to save money on your energy bill and help the planet at the same time. But applying for and using rebates can be complicated. Thankfully, Rewiring America provides a free tool to help you see what incentives are available for induction stoves and other energy efficiency improvements, and to find contractors.
Why are energy efficient upgrades important?
According to CenterPoint Energy, green improvements can save homeowners up to $250 a year on their average energy bill while also protecting them from extreme weather. For example, as USA Insulation suggests, more insulation can make your home less susceptible to heat waves and cold snaps. Solar panels and backup power can give you peace of mind knowing the lights will stay on during storms.
You'll have peace of mind, more money in your bank account, and the planet will be a little cooler and safer for everyone.
Resources like Energy Star’s Home Savings Web Tool and the Home Upgrade Service Provider Partnership are making these upgrades more accessible to Americans, helping them enter a cleaner future.
“These new resources are key to moving forward in the fight against the climate crisis and will help make energy efficient options more affordable and accessible, especially for millions of low-income and disadvantaged families across the country,” EPA Administrator Michael Regan said in a news release.
