The Green Room, a Ukrainian kitchen that started selling blinis, pierogi and kielbasa behind a St. Claude Avenue music venue 12 years ago, is closing. Owner Matt Rybachonek announced the restaurant's closure on Instagram on Monday, May 20, saying, “It's time to move on.”
In addition to the Eastern European cuisine mentioned above, The Green Room also serves borscht, golubtsy, and beef stroganoff, and as one of New Orleans' only Slavic kitchens, it has earned a loyal following over the years. After running a pop-up shop, Rybachonek landed at Siberia, a punk and metal music club in the Upper 9th Arrondissement, as a late-night food source. Rybachonek called it kuchnya, which means “kitchen” in Russian. Popular for its pierogi and burgers, Siberia became a culinary destination for his seven-year long run, complete with live music lineup. In 2019, Rybachonek left Siberia to open the Green Room at 1300 St. Bernard Avenue, significantly expanding Kuhnya's menu.
Known for affordable prices and one of the best burgers in town (the Black and Blue Burger with Brown Sugar Bacon Jam) and vegetarian sandwiches (beetroot Reuben), the Green Room is a go-to place for late-night food and delicious drinks. It continued to be a popular store. District 7. In his announcement regarding the operation of the Green Room, Rybachonek said: But things change, and so do people. The world is a different place than when I started throwing pierogi and burgers out the back window of a punk and metal club called Siberia. And I am a different person than the young, energetic, creative man I was 12 years ago. ”
