The developer of a 5,000-square-foot convenience store planned for the main entrance to Doctors Hospital has put out bids for the project.
Contractors have until May 21 to submit proposals to build the new Parker's Kitchen at 3645 Wheeler Road, which intersects with Medical Center Drive.
The idea of locating a store at a busy intersection sparked complaints from nearby residents in 2023. Sharon Kaminar submitted a petition to the Augusta Commission with more than 400 signatures opposing opening a Parker's at an intersection that already sees heavy traffic. Instead, the commission voted in September 2023 to rezone the address to a business classification to allow Parker's to construct a convenience store after demolishing the current building on the site. His two-story bank with a five-lane drive-thru was built in 1994 as Wachovia's main branch and was put up for sale in 2019.

The commission's vote comes three months after Parker's announced aggressive expansion plans for the store chain into the Augusta area market. Parker's announced in June 2023 that it will build one of its kitchens on the former Popeyes site at the corner of Windsor Spring Road and Tobacco Road.
The Augusta Chronicle first reported in 2023 that the company plans to build Parker's Kitchen at the entrance to Riverwood Plantation, which intersects with Washington Road and William Few Parkway in Columbia County.
