Cutting through the blue
Immersed in the sound

The rumors are all true
I can't answer right now
But you'll see him soon.
“Kitchen Disco Queen,” released on June 12, 2024 by Nice Guys Records, is an instantly memorable and totally irresistible song. It's a great introduction to an artist we will undoubtedly be following in the future. Having emerged as the first acclaimed professional flamenco guitarist in the music world, Welsh singer-songwriter Billy Sharp approaches music with a careful, steady and knowledgeable hand. Long before he began his current venture, he had the unique honor of having Billie Eilish favorite his first demo on SoundCloud, a fun fact that feels like a little badge of honor to him.
Like Irish music, Sharp's artistry At least, it's his first song as a full-fledged singer-songwriter. – is nuanced, quiet, and achingly evocative. “Kitchen Disco Queen” is comprised solely of his voice and guitar, but it’s multi-tracked and processed, with percussion and bass also acting as accompaniment. “Kitchen Disco Queen” and the rest of his upcoming debut EP, Rose Tint (out August 9th) is a raw expression of Sharp's musicality. Future releases may be enriched with the contributions and participation of other musicians, but for now, Sharp is singing to lonely people with just his guitar.
His chorus is an especially moving, melancholic crescendo that finds him in deep thought as he recalls an unforgettable night as “Kitchen Disco Queen.”
She said, “That's life.”
Under these city lights
I got a genius child
Driving her through the night
She wants more
But she lays down the law
And oh my, I was wrong
I see the heart, but it always breaks
At the end of the night I was surprised
Take a walk off the tracks
“The EP was recorded almost entirely on an old, beat-up 1960s Ramirez guitar that I fell in love with in a vintage guitar shop in London,” says Sharp. Atwood Magazine.
“It's a quirky and difficult instrument to record, but I wanted to capture as much of its charm as possible. Nearly every sound you hear on the record comes from this ancient instrument, from the percussion to the bass notes. I then experimented with the sounds using modern recording techniques, looping and layering them to build soundscapes and use them as a foundation for my compositions.”
Dizzying Lies
Hiding the truth
You guys are ready now.
Loosen the bottle
But the lights out is a sign of change.
That's reality
Looking for a friend's lost bag
And collect the clothes
She said, “That's life.”
Under these city lights
I got a genius child
Driving her through the night
She wants more
But she lays down the law
And oh my, I was wrong
I see the heart, but it always breaks
At the end of the night I was surprised

Sharp didn't necessarily go into detail about the story behind “Kitchen Disco Queen,” but it's not because she doesn't want us to know, but because she told us everything in the song.
It's a moment of reflection and reckoning, of unrequited love and ships in the night, of pain and passion and empathy and longing and everything that comes with loving someone deeply, whether they feel the same way about you or not. And we are drawn deep into that intense summer heat, sharing a special moment with a loved one, feeling the weight of Sharpe's heart as that person loves someone else. For a moment he's the star, but ultimately he's back to being a wallflower, just part of someone else's story.
At least, that's one interpretation. Stay tuned for more from this incredible artist. Billy Sharp's debut EP Rose Tint It is scheduled to be released in August this year.
