From Chef David – Updated from 2021
Timing is everything, especially in the kitchen. Distraction can cause the meat to become dry and tough. Visualizing the food is not the best way to judge when meat is done. I've found that using a digital thermometer helps me get moist, perfect meals every time. Take the guesswork out of it and become a better chef.
Digital thermometers can also be used to make sweets from meat and breads (baking is complete when the internal temperature reaches about 190 degrees).
What to look for in a digital thermometer:
There are several factors to consider when choosing a digital thermometer. My first criteria are measurements, duration (in seconds), and accuracy. Digital thermometers must produce reproducible results. My second criterion is ease of use. For digital thermometers, look at additional features such as the display and backlight. Finally, the size of the probe is important. A probe that is too short will not be able to penetrate thick cuts of meat, and a long probe will protect your hands from the heat.
It turns out that the main physical differentiation of digital thermometers is the display. If you get tired of it too quickly and can't read it, you won't be able to accomplish your purpose.
Introducing Thermopop 2
As the name suggests, ThermoPop is similar to a candy pop. The probe is long and comes with a sheath to protect the probe. The ThermoPop comes with a clip that attaches to your pocket, making it easy to carry. It's lightweight, versatile, and features a 4-way rotating backlit display.
ThermoPop is perfect for professional chefs who keep a digital thermometer in their side pocket like a pen. This is one of our smallest and most compact picks, but it doesn't sacrifice the probe or screen.
Improved functionality
Since we first tested it in 2021, the ThermoPop has improved significantly. Read speed has doubled (from 4 seconds) to 2-3 seconds, and accuracy has increased by ±1°F. The design is the same as the original ThermoPop, but improvements take this kitchen tool to the next level.
It is not waterproof, but the seal and button are molded into one piece, making it waterproof. Previously, you could change the orientation of the display with the press of a button, but now it has a 1 1/4-inch backlit display that rotates automatically, giving you a larger display with better contrast.
Improvement points
- Improved readability The display screen is now 33.33% larger and the digit height has been increased by 20%.
- Motion sensor auto rotating display It rotates automatically (the original ThermoPop rotated when you pressed a button).
- thinner 20% thinner profile than original
- 2x precision Accuracy of the original is ±2°F (1°C) to ±1°F (0.5°C).
- Faster The original gave a temperature reading in 2-3 seconds, compared to 3-4 seconds.
- Completely waterproof (IP67) The design is a significant improvement over the original which was splash resistant (IP66).
- automatic stop After 10 minutes of inactivity. The timeout feature can be turned on or off.
- Probe options The ThermoPop 2 is available in two probe lengths: 4.5 inches or 8 inches. Note: The 8 inch probe is slightly thicker and has a 1 second slower response time.
our thoughts
I like the auto-rotating display, which is easy to read. You can read the temperature seamlessly from any angle. I noticed an improvement in speed and accuracy.
Thermopop 2 is the perfect tool for most home chefs. It has a bright, easy-to-read backlit display and a protective probe sheath, making it easy to hold and transport. We found the precision and convenience of the ThermoPop 2 to be hugely impactful, simplifying temperature control during cooking and delivering perfectly cooked meals.
ThermoPop 2 has so many color options, it's perfect for kosher cooks and makes it easy to differentiate between meat, milk, pareve, and even Passover.
ThermoWorks ThermoPop 2 is an essential tool for any kitchen or barbecue.
