We brought together kitchen designers and interior experts to find out which old kitchen trends are coming back in 2024 and how to successfully use them in your home with a contemporary and classic feel.
Outdated kitchen trends are making a comeback
As the heart of your home, the kitchen is an important space that needs to be set up correctly. But what will kitchen design look like in 2024?

1. Return to natural wood

Painted kitchens have dominated trends for, well, forever, but natural wood tones will be big news in 2024. the goal? Bring warmth and coziness to the heart of your home. Just ask designer Tom Rutt.
“Natural wood kitchen cabinets have been on the rise for a while now as people celebrate sustainable natural materials and look to add texture and warmth to their homes,” Tom explains. Aiming for warm tones when decorating, not only in the kitchen but throughout the house, will be the palette du his jour in 2024.
“But don't worry, we're not saying that old-fashioned glossy honey pine kitchens will be back in style. But natural wood, with its sophisticated, pared-back Scandinavian feel, “It's going to be one of the top trends in kitchen design next year,” he added.
So how do you translate that into your own kitchen plan? Sure, you can go the nine yards with custom light oak cabinets, or you can save yourself the hassle of replacing or refinishing your cabinets. If you want to update your existing kitchen without overdoing it, you can give a nod to this trend with accents.
Consider floating kitchen shelves made of natural wood or consider mixing new wood tones on your countertops, kitchen table, and even freestanding pantry. Want to take it a step further? For a subtle statement, try balancing out a wood island with painted cabinetry.

2. Adopt modern molding methods

Straight, clean lines are always popular in modern homes. The main feature that distinguishes modern kitchens from more traditional Shaker style cabinetry is simple (or lack of) factory fittings. But for the new year, we want to welcome a mix of old and new and add even more drama to the cabinet fronts.
“Kitchen cabinet moldings are back in a big way and will feel fresh as a daisy in 2024,” says designer Montana Lovell. “Say goodbye to the outdated feel of stuffy, old kitchens and say hello to this modern, gorgeous take on heavy factory moldings. I love the nod to that,” she added.
If you're the proud owner of a flat-front kitchen and want to give it a little makeover, you may want to consider custom (or DIY) additions to your cabinets. After all, this is just for added drama. Whether you choose to add molding, trim, or beading to every door front or highlight a key feature like a kitchen island, this added tactility creates waves throughout the space. It brings a dynamic decorative quality.
3. Try a 1970s-inspired color palette

As you may have already noticed, warmer colors are coming to the forefront when it comes to kitchen colors next year, and things are heating up even more. Designer Kathy Kuo sees this as a return to the wavy, warm colors of the '70s.
“It feels like the 1970s-inspired kitchen look will be back in 2024,” says Kathy. “I'm not talking about carpeted kitchens or fancy wood paneling here, but rather a combination of dark earth tones and light colors, a bit more than the farmhouse kitchen look that has long been the norm. “Just refers to a playful overall look,” she suggests.
And it's not just the '70s color palette that you need to embrace, but also a sense of nostalgia and comfort. A testament to this year's timeless appeal, the true hallmark of a 1970s-style kitchen is a space filled with texture, inviting colors, and atmosphere for socializing. By combining soothing, saturated colors with contemporary finishes and muted neutrals, you can achieve a look that's the best of both worlds.

4. High gloss finish

Speaking of the 1970s, even the “outdated” high-gloss kitchen is being reimagined for 2024. Futuristic, space-age, glossy kitchens first became popular in the 1970s and had a bit of a resurgence in the 2010s, before everyone fell in love with the matte cabinets that are so popular today. style. But Farrow & Ball color curator Joa Studholme says everyone will be looking for a glossy glow next year.
According to Joa's expertise, if the idea of an all-over glossy kitchen doesn't particularly appeal to you, the way to balance this trend is through a mix of finishes. “The use of high gloss on cabinetry is used in statement schemes to highlight accent pieces and is very eye-catching. Balancing ultra-matte and full gloss gives a space a modern and sophisticated look. It's a gorgeous, if unexpected, way to add a sense of style.”

5. Replace the inner glass

Just when you think a trend has passed its peak, trend cycles bring it back again. And nothing looks more retro than a return to period-style interior glass.
Lately this trend has leant towards a sleek industrial style, but the look has evolved since then, becoming softer with a focus on wood, and bonus points if it's reclaimed or antique. “It's especially popular in long, narrow homes where designers and homeowners are looking to funnel light into dark corners of the home. It's natural to have windows and doors inside to let light in. It seems so,” he advises. H&G's Mr. Havey Hutton, Head of Interiors Department.
For Helen Parker, creative director at deVOL, a pantry shouldn't be hidden behind a big solid door. “The most essential elements of a kitchen are the pantry and kitchen table. They will never go out of style and will always remain the heart of the kitchen,” says Helen. Replacing your pantry or pantry door with a glass front can not only open up a small space, but also create more display opportunities in your kitchen.
6. A new way to style all white

There's no doubt that colorful kitchens have become a big trend in recent years as homeowners avoid a clinical look and go for something more appealing. But all-white kitchens are back on top, according to Molly Torres Portnoff, designer and founder of DATE Interiors.
Although it may not have the same impact as a brightly colored kitchen, a white kitchen is a timeless choice. “Colored kitchen cabinets have made a huge splash in recent years, but there's a timeless chic and classic feel to white kitchen cabinets,” says Molly. “I love using warm white shades like Benjamin Moore's Dove to create an inviting and interesting atmosphere in the kitchen,” she advises.
To dispel the showhouse concept, the way to style an all-white kitchen in 2024 is to focus on the details. Try statement checkerboard floors, jelly-like patterned or naturally textured tiles for your backsplash, and don't forget to inject some color into your countertops. Lighting, accessories and even appliances play an important role here, with white cabinets serving as a background for the overall aesthetic.
