I may be a little late to this party, but Monday was Memorial Day and yesterday was a day of catch-up, so can we all be a little lenient? Plus, Slow Dog was on a White Claw heater recently, so I'm the only one who can break this news to you. I'm a guy of consistency.
Either way, the press conference at Fox Raceway featured one of the best exchanges ever between former Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha teammates Hayden Deegan and Levi Kitchens.
The two have trained together for years, and Levi told me he's been asked hundreds of times if he's really Hayden. Here's what happened after our friend Gypsy Tales asked Deegs the question at a press conference:
Deegan: I went off the track. I didn't accelerate. I did what I had to do. But Mitch is catching up. I don't know. Levi, do you think I deserve to win?
kitchen: I mean, it depends on how much slower I was, but I don't think I could have passed him. But it was a tricky situation and my friend Tom (Viallet) was disqualified in a similar situation. So maybe it really wasn't possible. I don't know. If Tom hadn't been disqualified, maybe things would have been different, but I don't know. But he beat me.
Deegan: Simply put, from now on there will be a war until the end.
Whether you're a Hayden Deegan fan or not is up to you, but he deserves credit for keeping it very real: there are only a handful of riders in the sport who would stand in front of a room full of industry figures and ask their rivals if they thought they could beat them.
Levi seems like the type of guy who will play the game without a care in the world and then use that as motivation throughout the week to get the production he needs to win the following weekend.
Add Tom Viale into the mix and it will be a three-way battle for the coveted 250MX championship.
As Deegan said, it's going to be an all-out war. The players are young, hungry and ready to give it their all to ensure we bring home the championship.
One of the things we want, and I speak on behalf of all of the media, is that these people want to continue blaming each other in press conferences.
