Not long ago, home cooking expert Ina Garten opened up about the knives she uses every day to prepare her favorite recipes. Now, the Barefoot Contessa has shared another important tidbit: how she keeps her knives sharp.
After recommending the Wüsthof Gourmet Knife Block, Garten shared a video on her Instagram page for her Ask Ina series, showcasing how she keeps her knives sharp. The answer? Chef's Choice's Model 1520 Electric Sharpener.
It's often said that the most dangerous tool in the kitchen is a dull knife, and while many of us might opt to take our knives to a professional to sharpen them, Garten proves that sharpening at home (with trusty equipment, of course) is actually quite possible.
Chef'sChoice Model 1520 Electric Sharpener
The 1520 Angle Select Professional Electric Knife Sharpener is the perfect tool for improving the sharpness of both 15-degree and 20-degree class knives. Its patented 100 percent diamond abrasive sharpens faster and easier than any other method, resulting in a sharper, longer-lasting edge.
“You've seen chefs sharpen their knives,” Garten says in the video, “and I'm always worried that I'll sharpen it at the wrong angle and ruin the knife, so I'm going to show you how to sharpen a knife.”
She then demonstrated how to use a sharpener, explaining that it has two sides, a coarse side and a fine side, and recommends gently running the knife through each side twice to achieve the best cutting edge.
“All I do is wash the knife and remove any fibres, and then I always have a perfectly sharp knife,” she says.
Experts say sharp knives are essential for safe and effective cooking, not only ensuring sharp cuts, but also reducing the risk of losing your grip, which can happen when a knife becomes dull.
“If you hire a professional, we recommend sharpening your knives once a year.” Home & Garden Editor Jennifer Ebert says, “But if you have an electric sharpener like the one from Ina Garten, you can sharpen it about once every three to four months.”
We love the sleek finish of Chef'sChoice products, but they also come in black for those who prefer a darker look, and either way, these neutral colors will match just about any existing kitchen décor and style.
