When Leah Ring chose Benjamin Moore's Summer Blue for Katie Szymanski's Los Angeles kitchen, it wasn't because she thought the color was trendy. It was more a psychological experiment. The interior designer at Another Human is a firm believer in the power of color to influence emotions. The swatch seemed like the kind of color that would make her therapist and entrepreneur client feel happy and energized every day (and it was!). But she didn't know then what we know now: the periwinkle hue has also appeared in countless other kitchens.
Swift Direct Blinds, a UK-based window treatment supplier, recently looked at Google search data and discovered that periwinkle-colored kitchen cabinets are growing in popularity, up almost 400% year-on-year. Actual Most popular cabinet colors: In kitchens, white is unsurprisingly the top choice, followed by black and blue. We think the surge in periwinkle is a derivative of the latter. Over the past year, we've seen shades of baby and cornflower blue appear in more and more kitchens, so it's no surprise that slight variations on the color, like ones with stronger shades of violet, are starting to pique people's curiosity.
In the few periwinkle-colored kitchens we've seen, including this Stockholm apartment designed by Westblom Krasse Arkitektkontor (pictured above), the purplish blue blended perfectly with the pale yellow (in both the wall paint and backsplash tile). Plus, like most hot design trends, we were a little skeptical at first, but when we see the Swedes doing it, we know it's worth a try.
