We applaud any duo who has small children, keeps a spotless kitchen, and regularly hosts dinner parties in their home. That's exactly what Lindsay Black's clients are like: two doctors, one of whom is an accomplished pianist. And they wanted to be able to do just that in their new home in East Memphis, Tennessee. They chose this home not for its layout, but for its traditional feel, mature landscaping, and good neighborhood. So it took work to get there.
Architect David Anderson repositioned the kitchen so it overlooks the backyard, converted the previous space into a small but well-equipped laundry area, and turned the former fireplace room (which was removed) into the family's everyday kitchen. Black complements the cozy 8-foot ceilings and new layout with dark walnut finishes, muted colors, and French country details. The result is an understated, beautiful room that's also perfect for impromptu cocktail hours.
