A safety alert has been issued after a tumble dryer fire completely destroyed a first-floor kitchen.
The blaze broke out in Burry Port, Carmarthenshire, earlier this month and firefighters spent two hours trying to make the scene safe.
Mid West Wales Fire and Rescue Service advised people not to leave tumble dryers unattended or overloaded.
Police said the vehicles “have powerful motors with fast-rotating parts which become very hot”, and issued the warning after other accidents earlier this year.
In March, Denbigh resident Emma Vaughan received a phone call informing her that her house was on fire.
Her tumble dryer caught fire and temperatures in the utility room where the dryer was located reached 300°C (572°F).
Luckily the doors were closed so the other rooms were not on fire, but they sustained smoke damage.
In April, BBC Wales reporter Leanne Price said she was “extremely grateful” that a passerby woke her and her family up after they were saved from a house fire on April 9.
Fire Safety Advice
-
Do not overload plug sockets and take care by checking visible wires for scorching or burnt marks.
-
Don't leave appliances unattended: Don't turn on your tumble dryer before you leave the house or before going to bed.
-
Make sure your dryer is well ventilated and the vent pipe isn't kinked, clogged or crushed.
-
Always clean the filter after using the tumble dryer
-
Always allow each drying program, including the 'cool down cycle', to complete fully before emptying the machine.
-
Don't ignore the warning signs: If you smell a burning smell at the end of the cycle or your clothes get hot, stop using the appliance and have it inspected by a professional.
