Police were called to Hell's Kitchen High School this afternoon after an altercation left two students with knife injuries.
One of the teens was seen being taken by an FDNY ambulance outside the school building on W. 49th Street between 9th and 10th Streets. Paramedics were treating visible wounds on his chest and there was blood on his white underwear.
According to police, on Tuesday around 1:20 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call for an assault at 439 W. 49th Street. Officers from the Midtown North Precinct responded and upon arrival found two men in an altercation.
One person was slashed in the face and the other was stabbed in the torso, authorities said. Police confirmed those individuals were subsequently taken into custody and transported to area hospitals in stable condition. An NYPD spokesperson said the investigation is ongoing.
Department of Education spokeswoman Jenna Lyle told amNY that schools were placed on short-term lockdown.
“The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority,” Lyle said. “Violence has no place in our schools and this type of behavior will not be tolerated. Our excellent school staff and NYPD School Safety Officers are committed to responding to student-on-student incidents within our schools. In immediate response, the school was placed under a soft lockdown which has now been lifted and we will continue to provide further psychological support to students in need.”
The W49th Street building will house multiple schools and grade levels, including Success Academy Elementary and Middle School, Business of Sports School, Stephen T. Mather High School of Building Arts & Craftsmanship, Graphic Communication Arts High School, and Urban Assembly Gateway School for Technology. doing.
