A popular kitchen appliance is being urgently recalled due to a risk of overheating and catching fire during use.
The Australian Product Safety Authority has issued a recall notice for the BlendJet 2 portable blender following reports of injuries and property damage from users.
The recall notice warns that the blender's metal blades could break off during use, sending metal fragments into food or drink, causing “serious injury.”
If accidentally swallowed, broken blender blades can cause choking or serious lacerations.
Users have also reported that their blenders have overheated and caught fire while charging or in use, causing burns and property damage due to fire.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the blenders,” the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said in a recall notice.
Products with serial numbers between 5201000000 and 5542999999 may be affected.
The serial number is printed on the bottom of the base.
The affected blenders were sold online and in national retailers including Harvey Norman, JB HiFi, Myer, Costo, The Good Guys, Kitchen Warehouse and Mini-Max.
These were available from October 2020 to November 2023.
In a statement on its website, Blendjet said none of the reported accidents resulted in “serious injuries or significant property damage.”
The company promised to offer a refund or exchange basis to “mitigate the likelihood of these issues occurring if the unit is used as instructed.”
BlendJet 2 portable blenders currently available for purchase have already been updated and are not affected by the recall.
