Why We Love Foyle's War? Most importantly, no one else could have played the role better than Kitchen. He displays honor, discretion and courage, countering any deference to authority with an even greater deference to the truth. He also rocks the hats and period costumes. (But mostly the hats!) His team is also stunned by the fully formed character, chauffeur Samantha Steward (Honeysuckle Weeks) and DS (later promoted to DI) Paul Milner (Anthony Howell), each with their own story arc.
Hastings (near where French troops ominously landed in 1066) is depicted as a sleepy little town transformed by the war effort, and there's a strong sense of time and place. Crime persists, but so do wartime problems: racism, betrayal, rationing difficulties, blackouts, and air raids. The historical detail is impeccable, plus there's the fun of spotting some of the young actors who will one day become stars in smaller roles.
