top chefs in wisconsin This week we delivered two strange productions with awkwardly constructed challenges and last-chance kitchen twists that require additional information to make sense of.
The first eliminated chef, David Murphy, was not participating. last chance kitchenBut he spoke about the reason.
beginning, top chefs in wisconsin Episode 2 Opening Quickfire Challenge, Guest Judges Colorado's Top Chefs The winner, Joe Frum, prepared a beer-themed episode. Chefs had to create dishes using hops.
This was a big challenge because cooking with flowers, which are inherently bitter flowers, has all the possibilities and challenges, and some chefs remembered the smell of the pot. There were some great dishes too, including Laura's winner, hopped rice pudding.
The challenge itself was filmed in chaotic conditions, with the camera struggling to find and focus on the subject. But what's really frustrating is the rapid succession of presentations and reviews. It's ridiculously fast. Some of the chefs only looked at the screen for a few seconds without any real reaction or feedback.
Kristin Kish introduced the Elimination Challenge being held at Miller Brewery.
They went there to cook food for bar snacks. No, it's not beer. It's also not designed to be paired with beer. Full of curiosity.
During the judging, the judges drank Miller High Life, the “champagne in beer,'' from champagne glasses, which may be preferable to the usual drinking methods such as solo cups or projectiles.
I think/hope so best chef Considering it's the historical center of the area, we'll eventually do an actual beer challenge.
I highly recommend the Tangent: Padma Lakshmi episode in Milwaukee taste the countryInvestigate how the city's American cuisine, like hot dogs and beer, is actually immigrant food.
So, top chef 21The second challenge was to work in teams to prepare a variety of bar snacks such as popcorn, potato chips, and corn nuts and elevate them as part of a progressive menu.
This idea of taking your daily diet and boosting it isn't new, but no one seemed to have a clear understanding of what it meant.
“There seems to be some confusion here,” Tom Colicchio said during the review. “You're not supposed to take a snack and turn it into a dish; you're supposed to take a snack and turn it into a snack. ” he said.
I was absolutely certain that Kenny would be a huge failure with his potato chip inspired dish. Because he didn't use potato chips and shaved potatoes instead.
Kenny also said his cooking was a “rebellious attack in culinary school” and that he dropped out because he “forgot to re-enroll.” I thought that funny story meant bye-bye Kenny, especially since he was struggling so much in the first week.
Meanwhile, on the other team, Charlie used real potato chips to cover the fish. The judges didn't like Charlie's dish, not because of the chips, but because he found them bland (and one was overcooked), but they loved Kenny's fries.
What was even more strange about the structure of this challenge to me was the way it was judged.
Each team had to create a progressive menu, while each team presented their dishes side by side. The judges didn't really get a progressive experience because in each round he was eating two separate dishes at the same time. It's like tasting wine and drinking hot chocolate for every glass of wine.
Maybe they could have put some dishes in order and judged one team at a time? Or maybe the progressive part didn't seem that important, so they could have ditched it and instead Try your hand at bar food.
While cooking, Dan revealed to us that he has Kennedy's disease, and said that about 70 percent of his shaking while plating is due to Kennedy's disease, and 30 percent is due to nerves and stress. “This is what happens when you get older,” he told his fellow chefs who helped him. But then he told them all about it.
Rashica won with her beer cake and pretzel granita (which she froze in liquid nitrogen because it wouldn't harden), and Valentine lost because her corn soup was too thick and didn't actually use corn nuts.
“There's corn and there's toasted corn kernels, but they're not the same thing,” Gail Simmons told him. But Gail! There are potato chips and there are sliced raw potatoes, and they are not the same thing.
Valentine found out he was headed to Last Chance Kitchen, and of course it was a win-win for new host Kristen Kish and guest judge Joe Flamm – and last week during elimination. I realized I hadn't heard of Chance Kitchen. And we were about to learn why.
Last Chance Kitchen Surprise Valentine and Me
in last chance kitchenjust one more time best chef Tom Colicchio welcomed Valentine in the kitchen, where the lighting created a “moody” atmosphere. However, there was no one else in the kitchen.
The first eliminated chef, David Murphy, and his hat were not there.
Instead, Tom introduced top chef 21The 16th contestant: Sue Ann, executive chef at a Chicago restaurant.
He seems kind, but what's going on now? Where was David Murphy and his hat? Did he not want to participate or was he unable to participate so the producers brought in a replacement? If so, why don't you say so? Was the network so taken aback by David's bailout that they demanded the producers add a replacement, as if it was a planned twist?
This is just an educated guess on my part, because it's just nonsense to bring a perfect contestant into the second chance arena because he doesn't need a second chance yet.
On Instagram — places mentioned by David best chef In just one post in February, his account responded to a comment with the following:
I was not allowed to participate. I can't say anything more…NDA
This added another mystery, but at least answered the question of why he didn't join the LCK and why they had to bring someone else into the show.
This led me to believe that Hsu was an alternate and not the scheduled 16th place contestant. After all, in recent seasons, best chef Last season there were 15 chefs; Top Chef: World All Starsthere were 16 pieces.
Tom tells them that they can re-enter the tournament if they win five games, so it looks like the two LCK winners will be returning to the tournament.
This challenge was the reverse of the episode's challenge. The idea was to transform haute cuisine like caviar and real champagne into comforting dishes paired with unsponsored beer.
Valentine decided to use corn again, but it seemed to be a mistake on his part, as the corn puree in his New England lobster bake was too thick.
Meanwhile, Sue made good use of the randomizer to disrupt the food competition. He incorporated multiple premium ingredients into his version of fish and chips, including lobster, champagne, and caviar.
Frankly speaking, last chance kitchen It's already sketchy, one person is making the decisions, and it's not like they're making decisions blindly. And I can see why the producers wouldn't want a completely random new contestant introduced by the judges to lose in his first LCK battle.
So after Valentine left, I was glad that Tom explained in detail what he liked about Sue's cooking and strongly advocated for his continued role and Valentine's departure.
