Eflorist-based David Denyer has previously won the Chelsea Gold Medal and Best in Show titles at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show.
A flower expert who has appeared on the TV show “Gardeners' World” shared some fun facts about peace lilies.
“What many people may not know is that peace lilies need potassium to help them grow,” Denier says, “so using banana peels is a unique way to help them do this.”
However, instead of sticking a banana peel in the soil, there is a “real way” to use a banana peel to stimulate the growth of peace lilies.
Deniel explained: “To make a potassium-rich fertiliser, place banana peels in a jar of water and leave it for at least a day or two – the longer the better!”
“Use lots of banana peels; the more you add, the more potassium will be in the water.”
Once the soaking process is complete, Denier recommends “filling a new pitcher with the water and disposing of the banana peels.”
“Then dilute the banana peel water with fresh water and water your peace lilies with the liquid,” Deniel instructed.
Gardening enthusiasts promise that using banana water twice a week will “help keep the soil nutrient rich and promote growth.”
He stressed the importance of following the process outlined above, saying failure to do so could result in problems.
“Simply throwing banana peels into the soil can attract pests and insects which will eat the bananas and cause them to wither and die faster,” Denier warned.
When following the correct procedures, it is most important to continue regular maintenance of your plants, such as watering them once a week.
Additional maintenance includes placing houseplants in indirect sunlight and plucking off leaves and tepals.
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) clearly states: “Decapping is the term used to describe the removal of wilted or dead flowers from plants.”
Deniel advised that general maintenance on your peace lily plant, along with the banana water hack once every two weeks, will “keep it healthy.”
Mr Deniel said with a bunch of bananas costing just 16p it was a “simple and cheap trick” worth trying.
“Peace lilies usually have a lifespan of three to five years, but with proper care they can survive for decades,” he added.
