INDIAN BEACH, N.C. (WNCT) — Eight years ago, Matthew Manns' father decided it was time to leave the helm of one profession and move into the driver's seat of another.
That career change led to the creation of the Captain's Kitchen food truck.
“It all started with my dad. He's been a commercial fisherman and captain all his life, and he's always loved cooking,” Manns said.
Mann's father made their signature shrimp burger. “Lightly breaded and perfectly fried shrimp, nestled in a half-pound bun.”
“Schlinburger is our number one seller so far,” Manns said.
Mance followed in his father's footsteps and became a captain at the age of 19.
“I got kind of bored with it, so I decided to come back home and pursue this,” Manns said.
Manns said the food truck was very well received. We have regular customers who come back every time they visit the city, and some locals who visit frequently. Manns said all the support from the community ultimately led to the purchase of a larger truck and expansion of the menu.
“Sometimes we have customers who come back four, five, six times during a week's vacation,” Manns says. “We have a really great staff and we are really happy to have great customers.”
Tracy Porter and her family regularly visit the area where Captain's Kitchen operates. She said they started eating out of the truck years ago and continue to support the business. What is her favorite dish? Shrimp burger. She has recently branched out even further and is experimenting with more items.
“I've really grown to like the scallop burger. So, it's a toss-up,” she said. “Very good.”
During most summer months, the Captain's Kitchen is located in or near the Island Encore Consignment parking lot.
