Jen Nash, head of design at UK-based kitchen retailer Magnet, pays attention to sustainability, functionality and beauty, and sees the fusion of nature, technology and personalization make a bigger statement in the kitchen. He says, pay attention to what you produce. Nash offers the following predictions about kitchen trends expected to be popular in 2024:
black kitchen
Last year, black was the fastest growing magnetic cabinet color, with sales increasing 112%. The term “black kitchen” has skyrocketed in online searches, with more than 40,500 hits per month on Google searches, and “#blackkitchen” has more than 138 million views on TikTok.
“A classic yet bold design statement, black kitchens offer lasting appeal and can stand the test of time in home design,” says Nash. “The versatility of black means it can be easily combined with a variety of colors and materials, and it also has practical utility in hiding dirt, stains, and scratches.”
beyond white
On the other hand, white and gray kitchens are quickly becoming outdated. Magnet reports that sales associated with this color scheme are down 46% year over year, with an even bigger drop for gray kitchens, which are down 56% year over year.
“In recent years, the popularity of white and gray kitchens has become less appealing,” says Nash. “While these colors are known for their timeless appeal, they can also give off a clinical feel.” Instead, homeowners in 2024 will add personalized design choices. Nash added that by doing so, they are looking for bolder designs that can show off their individuality. “White and gray don’t allow for the level of flair and personal expression that homeowners are looking for.”
one wall kitchen layout
While L-shaped, U-shaped, and galley-style kitchens have dominated design, homeowners seem increasingly focused on optimizing, and in some cases downsizing, the available space. According to Magnet, the popularity of one-wall kitchens is skyrocketing, with Google searches increasing by 170% in the last month alone.
“There was a misconception that tied the practicality of a kitchen to its size,” says Nash. “The general idea is that bigger is better. However, homeowners are beginning to realize that practicality and functionality are less about size and more about how space is utilized. Masu.”
Homeowners prioritize multifunctional uses such as cooking, socializing, and relaxation. One-wall kitchens allow homeowners to optimize space by condensing the kitchen along one wall and reallocating space within the kitchen to other purposes other than cooking.
“All in” for sustainability
Magnet predicts that sustainability will be at the forefront of kitchen design in 2024. “With the increased focus on environmental responsibility, there will be a huge emphasis on bringing the outdoors in,” says Nash. “The use of recycled and natural materials such as wood, stone, and plant-based accents will be common, creating a sustainable environment that reflects the tranquility of the outdoors.”
But sustainability trends go beyond mere aesthetics. Nash notes that water-saving fixtures and innovative waste management solutions will also emerge as “essential kitchen features that transform spaces into eco-friendly sanctuaries.”
